News Flash About The Atkins Grapefruit Diet

The Atkins Grapefruit diet seeks to cash in on the popularity of the fad grapefruit diet and the less fad but still fad Atkins diet, although it has nothing to do with the Atkins estate or company.  A closer look into this diet shows that it may not be all it claims to be.

You'll be hard pressed to find information about the Atkins Grapefruit diet, such as any details of the company that produces it.  One common element of cons is that clear information is generally hard to find.  The Atkins grapefruit diet is purposely deceptive in its origin to convince people that it is a legitimate combination of two popular fad diets.

Is the Atkins grapefruit diet something that was found locked away in a safe by the late Dr. Atkins?  No, in fact the Induction phase of the Atkins diet is bereft of fruit, and there's no mention of the grapefruit version on the Atkins web site.

Here is what can be eaten in the induction phaseThese are the foods allowed in the Atkins diet Induction phase – sorry Atkins grapefruit diet, no fruit here:

Fish of all kinds
Chicken, turkey and other fowl
All sorts of shellfish
Any meat such as beef or pork
Eggs cooked in any style including fried
All sorts of cheese
Any vegetable you can name
A variety of herbs and spices
Butter, lard, any oils
Water and other low carb drinks including diet soda

Unfortunately for the Atkins grapefruit diet, there no fruit.  Later phases of the diet do allow fruit juice and even specifically mention grapefruit.  But when compared to the amount of Grapefruit recommended on the Atkins Grapefruit Diet, again there is a disagreement.

The Atkins Grapefruit Diet recommends a cup of grapefruit juice or a cup of grapefruit sections, with 8 and 18 carbs respectively.  Even the phases of Atkins that allow grapefruit limit intake to below 8 grams of carbs of grapefruit per day.  the two diets just don't mesh.

A smart person would immediately peruse the Atkins web site in search of the Atkins Grapefruit diet.  It starts to sound fishy when there's no mention there.

In general remember this.  Any diet that relies too heavily on one food or food group is going to be unhealthy.  The Atkins diet frowns on eating the way the Atkins Grapefruit Diet recommends.

I know! I know! Fruit is thought to be beneficial for your diet.

You are right, it is! However, drinking only the juice, and leaving behind the fiber and other helpful elements of the fruit, leaves you with only a high calorie liquid. This is what makes you fat. Consuming the whole fruit, gives you the extra fiber that you need to control your appetite. You also are more likely to want more, as fruit juice is very high in carbs. 

The end result is that drinking too much fruit juice will make you fat. So, eat the whole fruit, and benefit from the fiber and other beneficial components to maintain a healthy diet.
