Walking to lose weight has become a popular strategy for people of all ages, but if you’re like many people you may have a few questions about the actual calories burned walking and how this gets you closer to your weight loss goal.

Walking is an ideal exercise for anyone who has never exercised before, yet wants to shed the pound.

Many people just like you are wondering how long and how fast you need to walk for in order to lose weight.

Calories burned walking and weight – what is the relationship exactly?

Before we get to that, let’s take a look at how calories and your weight relate.

One pound of body fat equals 3500 calories. To lose one pound of fat in a week, you will need to burn another 3500 calories that week. Simple enough, right?

You can burn these additional calories either by reducing your calorie intake, or you can increase your activity level.

What’s important when you decide to take up walking to help you lose weight is that you start off slow, concentrating more on the distance you travel, rather than the speed. Soon enough, you will be able to increase the speed and your distance.

So what determines the number of calories burned walking?

The number of calories burned walking depends on your current weight, the speed at which you walk, and of course the number of miles you travel.

If you weigh 180 pounds and you walk 5 miles at a speed of 2.5 mph, then you will burn 490 calories.

But if you weigh 220 pounds and you’re traveling at a speed of 2mph for 1 mile, then you will burn 125 calories.

If you walk faster, you will burn more calories. As you swing your arms and to take bigger strides, you will burn extra calories.

If reducing your calorie intake is one way you plan to shed the pounds, be careful not to restrict your calories by too much. Whatever you do, don’t make the same mistake many do, and make your body think it’s being starved to death.

Why “starving” yourself doesn’t work

When your body senses that it is being starved, it goes into “starvation mode”. So the next time you eat, your body automatically stores much of what you just ate as fat, so it has a reserve of energy to draw from for the future. You’ve just told your body to store fat for the next time you plan on starving it of essential nutrients.

It’s not uncommon to come across people who have gone on such diets, only to find that they have put all of the weight back on.

You now know that the number of calories burned walking is all determined by your weight, your speed, and the distance you travel, so if you have a goal weight in mind, then perhaps a walk will do you good!
